NOAA port in Ketchikan wins 2023 Outstanding Project of the Year
An effort two decades in the making, the NOAA Fairweather Homeport Recapitalization Project was awarded the ASCE Alaska Section Juneau Branch Outstanding Project of the Year in the 2023 awards program. NOAA Ship Fairweather was legally appointed to the Ketchikan, Alaska, berth in 2002, but the dock was condemned in 2008, forcing the research vessel to call the Pacific Northwest its home despite the federal mandate and the fact the ship’s primary duties are mapping ocean waters off the Alaska coast. PND was the engineer of record on this approximately $20M fast-track design-build project, which cut the ribbon on its new facility in August 2023. NOAA Ship Fairweather returned to its Alaska “berthright” in October 2023.
